Training Requirements

The following is excerpted from the Radiation Safety Policies and Procedures Manual.

Prior to handling radioactive material at Vanderbilt, each person must satisfy the following training requirements:

  1. Specific Training Requirement
All radiation workers shall be instructed in safe handling methods for radioactive
material and radiation safety principals. The PI shall instruct employees in procedures
applicable to the specific operation employed in the laboratory including on-the-job
    training.
  2. Course Requirement:  Radiation Safety Principals
Principal Investigators are responsible for assuring that their radiation workers have
received adequate instruction in radiation safety principals. The three alternatives to
satisfy this requirement are given below:
    1. Attend the Radiation Safety Principals course given by VEHS
    2. Furnish evidence of previous attendance at a radiation safety course
    3. Pass an exam administered by VEHS
  3. Orientation Lecture:  Vanderbilt Radiation Safety Policies and Procedures
All new radiation workers, including Principal Investigators, are required to attend this lecture, regardless of prior experience or training.
