- Workplace Chemical List
- Each department/unit needs to compile a hazardous
chemical inventory list.
- The list should include, at a minimum, these any of these
products if they are used in the area:
- Housekeeping chemicals
- Compressed gases
- Mercury (if mercury-type sphygmomanometers are used)
- Chemotherapeutic drugs
- Any other chemical product (i.e. ferric chloride, silver
nitrate)
- Do not include minor consumer/office products such as
adhesive tape, glue, and “White-Out.”
- The List must be reviewed, updated and signed annually.
- The List is to be included with the department’’s annual
safety report submitted to the Hospital Safety Officer.
- Material Safety Data Sheets
- A MSDS is required for every hazardous chemical used, stored
or generated in the workplace.
- There should be a MSDS for every chemical on your workplace
chemical list (see 1b above)
- The MSDS should be readily accessible to employees during
each work shift when they are in their work area(s). (Electronic
access and other alternatives to maintaining paper copies of the
MSDS are permitted as long as no barriers to immediate
employee access in each workplace are created by such options.)
- Paper copies are currently required because:
- According to the interpretation of TOSHA/OSHA, when a
computer system is down, the access is not immediate unless
there is a paper back-up “readily available.”
- Online MSDS are not really “readily available.”
- MSDS are available:
- Here on the VEHS website's
main MSDS page.
- MSDS for the most common products used at VUMC are
listed here.
- Other MSDS can be found through the
subscription service
or other links to free
services provided through this web site.
