Hazard Communication

The Hazard Communication Standard, also known as the Right to Know Law, is mandated in US federal regulations (29 CFR 1910.1200) by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and by the Tennessee Division of Occupational Safety & Health (TOSHA) in State of Tennessee Regulations chapter 0800-1-9. In addition to the actual standard, the OSHA web site provides information on how to implement the standard.

The Hazard Communication Standard requires that all employees receive safety training about all potential workplace hazards.  VEHS provides introductory Hazard Communication training through this web site and also through New Employee Orientation.  VEHS does not provide specific training for all of the chemicals an employee might be required to use.  Specific hazard communication training should be provided at the departmental level.

Individuals who work with chemicals in laboratories are required to comply with the OSHA Lab Standard, which includes the requirements of the Hazard Communication standard but also incorporates additional requirements.  Information on training for the lab standard is provided here.

If you have questions about the Hazard Communication Standard or Hazard Communication training, please contact the Safety Training Officer.
