Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
& Chemical Safety Databases
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are documents
which provide detailed information for all of the hazards associated
with a specific chemical or chemical mixture. Each chemical
manufacturer is required to provide MSDS's for all of their chemicals.
You are required to have immediate access to the MSDS's for the
chemicals where you work. Online access to MSDS's and
Chemical Safety Databases is available:
- Through our subscription services
As a service to the Vanderbilt community, VEHS subscribes to
two online services which provide access to MSDS's and additional
Chemical Safety Databases. Notice: These
subscription service databases can only be accessed through the
campus network, so you should visit the free sites which VEHS
provides access to if you are off campus.
- Through links to free
MSDS's and
Chemical Safety Database web sites.
- From the
VUMC Top 100 MSDS web page.
Contact VEHS at 322-2057 if
you need assistance with finding MSDS's.

The
searchable databases available through the
Canadian Center for
Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) can be used to obtain
detailed chemical information for research, study or any number of
reasons.
Some of the many resources available through CCOHS include
MSDS
& ChemInfo,
RTECS
Searchable Database,
ChemInfo,
ChemIndex, and ChemPendium.
If you have any problems accessing the CCOHS subscription databases,
please e-mail the webmaster
or call 322-2057.
The
ChemWatch searchable chemical database
may be the world's
largest supplier of independently researched MSDS's. In addition to information about
pure chemical substances, ChemWatch contains information about
75,000 common mixtures, infectious substances and most clinical
drugs. The
database may also be searched using chemical drawings to
find a specific chemical or families of related chemicals.
Unique to this database is the ability to save
collections of MSDS's that you have accessed that you may need to
reference in the future. In order to use this function, please
contact David Price
to establish this function.
If you have any problems accessing the ChemWatch subscription
databases, please e-mail
David Price
or call 322-2057.
